Mattress FAQs

Mattress Size Chart

Because we make all our mattresses here in Melbourne, if you need a special size mattress, please contact your nearest outlet. We can arrange for most mattresses to be made in any size.

Regal Mattress Outlets can deliver across Melbourne. Our standard delivery charge from one of our stores is $50, or $80 if you are an outer metro or South-western suburbs resident. We can quote you on any delivery outside of Melbourne; just ask one of our team members.

Did you know that many old mattresses end up as landfill? It’s a pretty alarming thought, so we at Regal have made the decision to work with Dreamsafe Australia to remove your old mattress. Dreamsafe will recycle your old mattress and to date this has saved an AMAZING 10,500 tonnes of waste out of our landfills!!!

The way it works is you call Dreamsafe to arrange a pick up the same day as your old mattress is being collected. If you are worried about getting the timing right, our drivers will take your old mattress to the gate or porch to await collection so you can rest assured you are doing your bit to help the environment.

Dreamsafe will charge you a ‘per piece’ price (mattress and base = 2 pieces) and you pay their driver directly. Ask in store for more details.

7 Night Guarantee

If you purchase any mattress from one of our stores and you are not 100% happy with it for any reason, we can arrange to swap the mattress for another of your choice. The only cost to you is the cost of picking up your existing mattress and delivering a new one as well as any difference in value.

Of course there are a few terms and conditions that apply to this offer.

  1. You must use a mattress protector for this offer to be valid. If you do not currently have a mattress protector, we sell a range of fitted and strapped options in store.
  2. No soiled or stained mattress will be accepted. You will be charged for the return delivery of your original mattress if it is returned soiled or stained.
  3. All pick up and delivery charges will be the responsibility of the customer.
  4. If the customer is not purchasing a base from Regal, the customer MUST inform the sales people at point of purchase what sort of base they are using. If the customer is using any of the following bases, this guarantee will be void:
    1. Sprung bases
    2. Home made bases
    3. Damaged bases
    4. Slat bases with slats missing
    5. Posture slat bases which are upward curved, flexible slats, typically found on European bases as well as many bases from IKEA. (on pocket Spring Bases only)
  5. Purchases made without the customer lying on the mattress in store will not qualify for this offer unless specifically arranged with the store.
  6. We will do everything possible to ascertain the correct mattress for you, however, this offer is void if a team member has advised at point of purchase that you are not purchasing the correct bed for your requirements.

We rarely have any mattresses returned to us because we take the time to help you select the right mattress for your requirements.

On the odd occasion where a customer needs to exercise this option, the returned mattress is either recovered or sent to one of our stores as floor stock. Alternatively, we may sell it in one of our stores as a factory second.

You will never be delivered a returned mattress unless you have purchased ex-floor stock or a factory second.

We want to be upfront about the smell that some people experience when they take delivery of a new mattress.

Like a new car, mattresses may sometimes have a ‘new’ smell which will dissipate over a short period of time. Because we make all our mattresses from first grade, high quality brand new AUSTRALIAN materials, these may sometimes have a ‘new’ smell associated with them. But as we use all non-toxic materials INCLUDING our water based glues, any ‘smell’ will not be harmful to your health.

We make our mattresses constantly and unlike an imported mattress that has been sitting in a container sweating on the high seas followed by sitting in dusty dank warehouses, our mattresses come directly from our factory, so any smell is simply the smell of ‘newness’.

We suggest if you are finding the smell unpleasant to air your room well with cool air and ensure the mattress has no bed clothes on it. DO NOT place it in direct sunlight as this will exacerbate the problem.

If after a few days if you still notice any odour, please contact the store you purchased the mattress from or our head office to discuss options. We rarely find people notice any smell at all after 3 or 4 days and most of the time, you will notice no smell whatsoever.

We understand that some people have a heightened susceptibility to allergens. Obviously we cannot guarantee you won’t be affected by the materials used in any mattress (including ours), but we suggest the following:

  1. Always use 100% cotton mattress and pillow protectors which you can purchase in store. You should wash your protectors weekly and dry in the direct sunlight to kill any dust mites and their eggs.
  2. Always air your mattress away from direct sunlight with no bed clothes and vacuum using a vacuum head reserved specifically for your mattress.
  3. We only use 100% Australian made Dunlop foams. Click HERE to go to the Dunlop site to learn more about the properties of these foams.
The Healthy Homes website from Dunlop is a useful resource and can be found by clicking HERE.
  4. Discuss your concerns with one of our team members. We can make mattresses with 100% natural fabrics and 100% natural latex. We can also make mattresses with minimal foams or specially treated Ultra-Fresh foams from Dunlop.

These days you may have noticed in mattress showrooms that most mattresses are made with a ‘puffy’, ‘plump’, ‘quilted’ effect. This is simply there to make the mattresses ‘look good’ in the showroom. The quilting is usually Dacron and over time this Dacron may flatten down leaving a slight body impression.

This is normal and will not affect the performance of the mattress as it is the underlying foams and spring systems where the real work is being done. You should not be able to feel this when lying on your mattress and the impression should be only a few millimetres.

Of course if you are at all concerned or feel any discomfort, please contact us and we will arrange a warranty inspection.

Most mattresses work on most bases, but there are a number of exceptions and things to watch out for. Discuss these with your Regal team member before you buy a new mattress so we can ensure you select the right mattress for your base.

  1. Posture slat bases, which are upward curved, flexible slats, typically found on European bases as well as many bases from IKEA are generally not suited for pocket spring mattresses.
This is because the curved nature of the slat will unevenly move the individual springs and as such they will not work as they are designed to.
Latex mattresses are the best mattresses for posture slats as are Bonnell Spring bases. Ask in store for more details.
  2. Home made bases are great if you’re a handy man, but you may void your warranty if your base does not have enough slats or you use a non breathable solid material. Slats should ideally be 5cm apart. Ask in store for more details.
  3. Slat bases need to have slate evenly spaced, about 5cm apart. Do not use a slat base with slats missing.
You should also consider using a ‘slat mate’ on a slat base which can be purchased form major department stores. Alternatively, you could use fresh clean un-waxed cardboard (such as flattened boxes from the supermarket) to provide a better surface area for you mattress.
  4. Old ensemble bases are usually fine for a new mattress. Firstly make sure you have the right size, then check to make sure the base is stable with an even surface area and legs or castors that are not broken. If you are unsure, please discuss this with your Regal team member.

Bases are relatively cheap, so if in doubt it might be worth investing a few hundred dollars in a new base.

The best way to sleep is to replicate the way the spine is shaped when you are standing because this provides the most support and the least strain on your back.

If you look at your self sideways in a mirror when standing, you will notice a slight ‘s’ shape in your spine. This is how you should sleep (either as a back sleeper or a side sleeper). If you take away all the fancy marketing gimmicks that many companies use (which of course you pay for), it all boils down to this simple premise: support your spine in its natural curvature and you will wake up feeling refreshed.

Ultimately, the best way to discern which mattress is right for you is to come in to one of our stores and discuss your requirements with one of our team members. But there are a few things you can do to help us help you.

  1. What is it about your current mattress you like/dislike?
  2. Have you slept on any mattresses you love while away from your own mattress? What did they feel like?
  3. Do you have problems sleeping? If so, what causes this? eg: partner tossing, mattress lumpy etc.
  4. Do you have diagnosed back problems and if so, what are they?
  5. Has your Physiotherapist, Chiropractor or Doctor made a suggestion about what sort of mattress you need? If not, you may want to discuss it with them if you are concerned.

You might want to bring your favourite pillow in store to try a new mattress. This way it will feel more like home – don’t worry, many people come in and lie on our mattresses for long periods of time with their own pillow…some even catch a few zzz’s!

Choice magazine has also put together a great resource for consumers on how to select a new mattress. Click HERE to see what they say.

Some people think a really hard mattress is ‘good for your spine, but in actual fact this is not really the case.

As your spine should be supported in its natural curvature, really hard and really soft mattresses are probably not ideal because they interfere with this natural curvature.

Personal preference also plays a part in what is right for you. If you think about it, many people in many parts of the world sleep on the ground or on piles of hay and matting and their backs are just fine, so it does come down to what you are used to as well…just talk it through in store.

Ultimately, your body shape and weight will impact on the right sort of mattress for you, so trying 3 or so mattresses in store will allow you to get a good idea of what is best. Try to avoid trying too many because you will get confused, so allow your Regal team member to assist in selecting some alternatives to try. You don’t need to try every mattress in store if you answer a few simple questions that we will ask. After all, we’ve been selling sleep every day for over 10 years, so we think we’re pretty good at it by now!

If all this fails and you get home and don’t love your new sleep, remember we have a 7 night satisfaction guarantee, isn’t that the ultimate reason to come to Regal?

We suggest you change your mattress every 7 – 12 years. See what Choice magazine has to say about replacing your mattress by clicking HERE.

Turn your mattress (if it is a 2 sided mattress) and rotate it end to end regularly. Make sure that both sides of the ‘top’ and ‘bottom’ of the mattress get equal wear by flipping them. We suggest you do this on a monthly basis, but make sure you have help as many mattresses are heavy (especially latex).

Always use a mattress and pillow protector which you can purchase in store. You should wash your protectors weekly (so buy 2, one for the bed and one for the wash) and dry in the direct sunlight to kill any dust mites and their eggs. We suggest 100% cotton and we also suggest you replace them every few years.

Never fold a mattress as this will certainly damage the springs.

Don’t put a new mattress on a saggy, damaged base. Bases don’t cost much, so invest in a good base to prolong the life of your mattress.

Regularly air your mattress away from direct sunlight with no bed clothes and vacuum using a vacuum head reserved specifically for your mattress.

Avoid sitting on the edge of your bed. If you must, sit right back and in different placed each time.

Mattresses are not made the same way as trampolines, so don’t use them as one.

We accept Mastercard, Visa, American Express, EFTPOS and of course cash.

Personal cheques are accepted, however goods will only be despatched once the funds have cleared.

Lay buys are welcome.

We understand that sometimes you don’t want to use your own cash to purchase your new mattress, so we offer finance options for your convenience. Please discuss these in store with a team member as these offers change regularly.
